3 of the most stolen bikes in India & how to prevent your bike from being stolen

Every day, several bikes are stolen in India. In Delhi alone, around 32,984 two wheelers were stolen in 2017. The stats for 2018 aren’t available yet, but there has been a year-on-year increase in bike thefts, leading us to believe that the numbers will be just as shocking! Let’s just hope these motorists had valid two wheeler insurance plan when their bikes were stolen and get compensated for their losses.

Now, if you’re thinking about buying a new two-wheeler and if you’re worried about theft, you should know that 3 bikes are stolen more than others. So not buying these bikes will greatly reduce the chances of your bike being stolen. These thieve favorites are stated below:

1. The Bajaj Pulsar.

This bike is a hit amongst the youth. The Pulsar looks great, delivers good performance and is also well priced. Monthly sales for this bike are in the 90,000 units range. However, the Pulsar’s popularity is its biggest weakness – thieves know that finding a stolen Pulsar is like finding a needle in a haystack. Stats have also showed that black color Pulsars are a hot favorite amongst dacoits. The shocking part is that these stolen bikes are sold for as little as 3 or 5 thousand!

2. The Honda Unicorn.

This is one of the most preferred mileage bikes in the 150cc category. It looks good, rides smooth and it’s a Honda, making it favorite in the daily commuter segment. However, again, the popularity of this bike is its downfall, just like the pulsar.

3. The Activa.

The Acitva has become a synonym for scooters. Most people looking for a scooter usually end up buying an Activa.  This sort of demand makes the Activa a firm favorite amongst thieves. They know that they will be able to find a buyer quickly for these scooters.

What if you own/still want to buy these bikes?

All these bikes are the leaders in their segment. They have all the features that satisfy a customer’s needs. Therefore, if you already own one of these bikes, it makes sense to have a full-proof comprehensive 2 wheeler insurance policy, not a basic third party bike insurance policy. You could include add-ons such as return to invoice if you live in a theft prone area, to be extra safe!
If you have finalized on a Pulsar, Unicorn or an Activa and do not want to deter your decision just because they are most stolen bikes in India, there are a lot of precautions you can take to ensure you two-wheeler isn’t stolen. Here are some of them:

1. Handle Locks: Many of us forget to handle lock our bikes. However, without a handle lock, a thief can simply wheel-away your bike and crack the ignition at safer location. So always handle lock your bike!

2. Double locks: Cops say that double locks are a turn-off for thieves. This is because they are specialists in cracking the bike’s locks but picking secondary locks can be trick sometimes and take more time. You could also consider disc locks, they are small and tough to pick!

3. Anti-theft systems: Anti-theft systems as such an alarm will send thieves running when they go off! They will also reduce your two wheeler insurance premiums, an added bonus!

However, if a thief is determined enough, which bike you have & the precautions you have in place won’t matter. It’s best to get yourself a good bike insurance policy to ensure that, if the unthinkable does happen, you will be compensated for you loss!
